“In the Darkness even the smallest light can shine like a star...”
“Hmm...?”
My mind had been wandering for the last few minutes and the sudden comment pulled me back to earth. I guess if it didn’t make so much sense it would have annoyed me like one of those lame lines that guys use, ladies I’m sure you have heard them before, am I right? Those annoying, corny pick up lines they use all the time like was your daddy a thief? Coz he stole the stars and put them in your eyes which is usually followed up by an even dorkier so babe what are you up to tonight? The predictability of men is a constant frustration of mine, I mean what do they expect your reaction to be? Do they expect you to be flattered by a comment like that? “Aww your just saying that he he.” Newsflash, I don’t think so just keep dreaming. More like “Bravo Bravo you can use corny lines, you dork.”
But this one line wasn’t one of those lame pickup lines you hear so often in bars, it was simply a statement of fact, one that people often miss. I twirled my hair and stared off into space again, deep in thought, not even bothering to answer the comment.
“You’re doing it again... Hello?”
“Oh sorry Tai, I was just thinking. What were you saying?”
I looked over in his direction to prove I was listening; he rolled his honey brown eyes at me and sighed, his signature reaction every time I do something ditzy.
Tai has been one of my best friend’s since the first year of high school -Ugh there are some years I would like to forget... - but he has always been there for me. Someone to laugh at and joke around with, even a shoulder to lean on; god knows I’ve needed it. Plus he’s the only guy I’ve ever met who hasn’t screwed me over or traded me up for a hot flirty blonde, well at least not yet. He was pretty cool, when he wasn’t being a smart ass but he was a complete player when it came to girls and wasn’t the type to get involved in anything deeper than flirting.
Having said that I can completely understand why he was so popular with the other girls. He had sandy brown hair with natural highlights, in that messy surfers cut that suited him so much and perfectly framed his deep honey brown eyes, making them look even more irresistible, if that was possible. Plus he was the perfect balance between tall, scrawny and totally tank, he wasn’t decked out but he didn’t have that tall lanky look either -like alot of guys our age- He had more build than that, enough for a smooth chest, but no muscle bulges like those freaks on pro wrestling.

“Oh Tai, Would you shut up I'm on an important call here!” Oh here we go. My other best friend Hazel; who was poised threateningly towards Tai had finally addressed us for the first time this night. She has been pretty busy lately and had spent the past five minutes chatting excitedly on her cell to someone; I wasn’t surprised really, wherever you saw Hazel, the mobile inevitably followed.
“What to your beauty styler?” Tai stood up to tower threateningly over her; she always knew how to work him up.
“Hey this appointment is life or death!”
They were at it again, Hazel and Tai never got along for more than five minutes at a time it was kind of ironic that my best mates couldn’t get along but I guess their personalities clashed. I lost the gist of their conversation after a few seconds, having found it better to just space out in these situations, my eyes flicked to Hazel who seemed just about ready to grab Tai and dump him into the cold seawater a couple of metres from our feet.
Hazel was the girlish one of the group, the type who would dress you up for the fun of it. Sometimes I resent the idiot who equipped her with beauty products, because once you are in her sights, escaping is not an option. Let’s just say she was born on the lucky side of the gene pool, tall with a skinny build. She was even lucky enough to have beautiful, long, dark brown hair that she wears in a pretty much identical style every school day and today was no exception.  Her long brown hair willowed down the sides of her face, framing it in a collection of small bangs as it gathered to finish neatly just below her waistline. Her slightly pale skin was illuminated by the light of her mobile phone which she held to her ear, one manicured hand covering the talking end as she mouthed insults at Tai... Again.
I guess you could kinda call this our hangout time, you know somewhere to get away from the overly dramatic high school life which we endured on a weekly basis. Like the breath of fresh air you take in after another episode of ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ has finally finished on television and your relieved that nightmare was over, not from the crappy acting –Though that is almost as deadly- but from the fact that that emotionally crippling climate has died off in the deep droning of commercials.

It was a calm, quiet Friday and the noise of weekend parties quietly drifted towards our usual sanctuary just east of the local marina. We came here almost every Friday because it was always quiet, deserted and very well hidden in an almost forgotten area. Tai was in his usual spot on the small grass lawn which had grown over the holidays and sprawled out towards the large grouping of pontoons to our left and Hazel was perched delicately on a thick tree stump which we had used as a makeshift bench since a couple of months ago when we found this place. I was flopped in-between the two on the soft grass where I usually sat, my back on the large tree which grew over the expanse of the small lawn and covered it in shade.
Hazel picked a piece of birch off the bench and with her forefinger and thumb, expertly flicked it directly into Tai’s Forehead like a mini missile–a result of many practice shots on different days-. The makeshift missile, hitting its target and making a small tapping noise before dropping into the tangle of grass and small weeds at Tai’s feet.
“What do you know, your head is hollow, Tai,” I giggled, Unable to pass up the opportunity to pay him out.
“I would’ve thrown it at you, but from the looks if it you need all the brain cells you can get,” he replied smugly, a small smirk playing around the edges of his lips.
I shot him a dirty look as I pulled out a clump of dirt and grass from underneath my feet and hurtled it at him, only to have him duck and watch in dissatisfaction as it spluttered harmlessly against the sidewalk instead of clattering into his overgrown forehead.
“You should be worried about you depth perception too, retard,” he retorted, his smirk becoming even more pronounced, “You couldn’t hit water if you fell out of a boat!”
A ruckus of laughter interrupted my futile attempt to retort that last comment, looks like the others had arrived; finally.
